Mochidoki—which makes mochi, Japanese ice cream desserts made with rice cakes— arrived at direct-to-consumer shipping from the opposite direction. Long a wholesaler for restaurants including Tao, which has locations all over the country, Mochidoki was plugged into the frozen-food supply chain and already had a manufacturing facility in New Jersey, as well as fulfillment centers on either coast.
After opening a retail store in SoHo early last year, the company had planned to grow the direct-to-consumer shipping business slowly, said Claudio Locascio, Mochidoki’s president.
